What can we say, other than a prayer?
It is "the milestone that no one wants to reach," Anderson Cooper said on CNN Wednesday night.
"A quarter of a million people have died of a disease that did not exist a year ago," Dr. Sanjay Gupta said.
And "so many of the deaths were preventable."
A quarter of a million is a round number, and news organizations are primed to cover round numbers. Reporters were able to pre-write stories for this milestone days ago, maybe even weeks ago. I just hope everyone recognizes that the death toll didn't stop at 250,000 on Wednesday. States kept reporting more and more deaths later in the day. As of 9pm ET, the total recorded by Johns Hopkins was 250,426, for a total of 1,754 newly reported deaths in a single day.
