Aquai - Hello, The Blood Quantum is killing the native today.As the son of enrolled Mohican It is hard to walk with your head high. people look at me as black and not indian.But i remember what my grandmother taught me. She always told me were where indian, my grandmother was an Oneida Indian and my grandfather was a Mohican Indian but, through blood quantum they made my dad choose between his mother and father.For me I know who i am as a person of indian heritage and I feel you should not have to prove you are indian as long as you know who your parents are. I am a drum keeper and I know what it is to be an indian and to be proud of who you are, and me as a drum keeper gives me the chance to express how I feel about my Native American Culture and how very proud I am to be a Native American. The tribe needs to change their enrollment because the way things are going now they are letting the white man dictate who we are because they are trying to determine who we are as a people that is why they are trying to enforce this blood quantum issue and the people who are representing our tribes are letting them get the upper hand. One thing i do know and history can prove it, it was the white man who put a holocaust on the Native American. The black man did not sign a treaty.Do live on the Stockbridge-Munsee Band of Mohican Res,in Wisconsin. I am like a constant cold i will allway be there.Wneeweh {I thank you,}

Osiyo, sis...

But, yeah--this 'blood quantum' issue and problem has been with
us all, and for a long long time...

It goes more or less like this...

For the sake of guaranteeing band/tribal membership, and in
agreement with the other signers of past treaties, i. e., aka
the U. S. government, and for the sake of qualifying (sic) for
various indigenous related government programs, you--must--be
able to prove by the way of dna tests and/or documentation that
you are an actual descendant of a indigneous forebear...

It's legalese for saying that (sometimes) the descendants of
the forebears of our forebears enemies get to determine who
is who...

And some indigenous folk don't agree...

Life goes on...

Peace...

If your mother's father was Indian, it won't show up on the DNA test.

OTOH, lineal descent allows for everybody and his Cherokee princess grandmother, if he can prove she exists. LOL

My mother's mother (my grandma) both looked like a mixed blood and
carried on native american customs...

So stay tuned...

Peace...

I'm particularly skeptical of DNA because I doubt they got samples from every single nation, and there was a mass extinction recently, some 98%, killing off whole nations. Now, consider, they found five strains of mitochondrial DNA, which means that the mean percentage for a typical strain is greater than even a perfect sample.

My resources are limited as it is...

Maybe there's something others feel and need to 'prove'...

I am merely who and what I already am...

So I'll continue on via my search for evidence of forebears and their
living descendants...

That's enough proof to satisfy me...

Take care...

Peace...

Blood quantum itself was one of those stupid eugenic policies of the BIA. The other eugenic policy, hypodescent, was just as bad, and at the height of the eugenic movement, they decided the races were separate genera, not just the standard anti-miscegenist bull about separate species.

Osiyo, blood...

But you also should've been keeping up with that thread on the
very same subject via the ALL NATIVES forum...

And the ongoing discussion via the www.firstnations.com board?

Suffice to add: It was and is on the basis of the feedback which
came both by the way of complete strangers (elder couples)
and one Mexican indian brother who does know me which has led to
me starting my journey down the Red Road...

That is: As it was true it is true...

For some of us it was or is the judgement call of the people
which led or lead to our heeding it...

Not blood quantum...

Hardly the Bureau of Indian Affairs...

Take care...

Peace...
