An interesting book I am reading is entitled:
The Scalpel And The Silver Bear
The First Navajo Woman Surgeon Combines
Western Medicine and Traditional Healing
by Lori Arviso Alvord, M.D.
and Elizabeth Cohen Van Pelt
The book chronicles the childhood, and medical school studies of the surgeon, and how she returned to the reservation to work at the Gallup Indian Medical Center in Crownpoint, New Mexico. Dr. Alvord also discusses the traditions and culture of the Dine, and traditional healing techniques she decided to incorporate in treating her patients. The book is insightful, and enjoyable.
