Gangs Active On State Indian Reservations...
This is the title of an article that appeared Monday October 14, 2002, in the Duluth News Tribune, Duluth, Minnesota. However, I suspect that this is a growing problem in other states as well. The government has set aside "$320,000 for antigun and antigang projects on Minnesota's Northern reservations," with Red Lake being targeted as having the most need at the present time. Red Lake has the largest population of native americans in the state of Minnesota at 98.6% of any of the 11 other reservation sites throughout the state.
According to Pat Mills, tribal director of public safety on the Red Lake Reservation, "Our gang problem is very big, very real, increasingly violent, and its being organized from within the reservation."
