The very best that an unknown can do with monthlies is break even. Anybody can make money with an OGN. These are just ballpark numbers, but:

Let's say that you have a $2.95 book. You get $1.18 from distributors at your discount; you have to sell 1483 copies just to pay for your $1750 printing bill for 3000 copies. Say you took out a full page PREVIEWS ad, which adds another $1200 to it. Now you have to sell 2500 copies just to BREAK EVEN. You only have 500 copies left, so your profit MAXIMIZES at $590.00 for THE WHOLE FLOPPY. If you sell out the print run, which you won't.

Say you do it as an OGN, though, with the same number of copies printed but a $12.95 price tag. Yes, it'll cost you four large or so for the print run, but you pay for your print bill and PREVIEWS ad at 1003 copies and your profit maximizes at $10,344 when you sell out of your run, which you eventually will.

This is the secret of making money in independent comics, and everyone reading this has to go out and buy a copy of the ASTRONAUTS IN TROUBLE hardcover to thank me for telling you.

>This is the secret of making money in independent comics<

Holy shit!

I can't fucking believe you spelled this out for the whole god damn world to see. Anyone else would horde their proprietary information and never let anyone else benefit from their years of experience, or at least charge their future competition an arm and a leg for it... but you just give it away for free to potential self publishers the world over!

You are truly this industry's best friend, Larry Young. Anyone who thinks different is a fucking retard.

>everyone reading this has to go out and buy a copy of the ASTRONAUTS IN TROUBLE hardcover to thank me for telling you<

At the very least!

I would go one farther and say that anyone benefiting from your generosity with your proprietary information should give you a "thank you" in their book, and maybe send you a nice bottle of Scotch whisky.

Normally, I just keep my mouth shut instead of just chiming in with the "Great job, Lar." But I gotta say something here; from the bottom of my comics-loving heart, Larry, you are without a doubt one of the greatest men is comics.

And I'll definately pick up the ASTRONAUTS IN TROUBLE hardcover.

I have to second what Larry said. Plus- which you already know but need to keep in mind- graphic novels have a shelf life AND they can be distributed elsewhere besides your local comic shop.

In my opinion, the only setback as far as graphic novels go is the upfront cash to get the thing printed. If you don't have that much cash for what Larry suggested, my advice is to search for printers which allow small print runs at a decent price. Nothing wrong with going small at first then going back to press when you realize the book is selling and you're getting low on stock. Just keep in mind most printers need, at least, four weeks to get the book printed.

Hope that helps.

I can personally vouch that Larry isn't drunk. He was out doing deliveries to the post office and stopped by the Isotope completely sober.

I'd say just plain AWESOME it is!

The King of Independent Comics will always ship the cool shit out his own damn self. My man Joe at the Post Office always kids me that he will cry the day Ryan shows up alone.

I may be the great and powerful consumer, but there's at least a couple books I might not be consuming had I not heard about them on your boards.

Keep up the great work.
