they are off the table. The NRA masters have spoken. FoxNews 'reports' the WH is pushing back on this news

The Hill:  President Trump called National Rifle Association (NRA) CEO Wayne LaPierre on Tuesday to tell him that universal background checks for gun purchases are off the table, The Atlantic reported.

The decision to oppose an initiative that has strong support in public polling signals an apparent backtracking by the president from initial comments he made following two mass shootings earlier this month in El Paso, Texas, and Dayton, Ohio, that left 31 dead.

Trump at the time indicated support for legislation on “meaningful background checks,” saying the issue was not a question of the NRA or political partisanship.

“On background checks, we have tremendous support for really common-sense, sensible, important background checks,” Trump told reporters on Aug. 9 following the shootings.

However, Trump reportedly no longer supports the initiative.

It's a bizzarro world that creates more questions than gives answers.

The NRA has just lost 6 more high ranking board members that clearly indicate the makings of  a sinking ship. Then 45 backtracks background checks and starts to dance like a puppet that again caters to the traditionally held policies of the NRA.

How can this sinking ship still hold on to it's tradition political power?

Traditionally such questions would spur more questions and would probably be considered carrying the conspiracy narrative. But these are not traditional held times like we used to take for granted . It is the Trumpion time period.

So here is my theory for explanation..

Most all the participating actors  are  complicit in  bad dishonest behavior. Everyone from the politicians, lobbyists and  many  that support them have something to hide. My guess would be Russian  money was being laundered through an old established political lobby like the NRA. And with this comes all the human frailty that has gotten involved.

An open public airing of what has gone on would destroy the cash political cow we all have allowed. The SCOTUS opened the door with Citizen's United. And we all have to  come to terms with what many now have become.
