Where were  you when you first heard about the attacks on 9/11?   What was your reaction?

I was at work on my nursing unit, very busy so did not follow closely, just bits and pieces.  Reaction was stunned disbelief that something of this magnitude could happen.

I was totally shocked, in total disbelief; at first I thought it was a movie. Reality quicly set in.

i was in bed. I had not gotten up for my workday  yet. The radio said it and i thought it was a "horror story"--like the famous Orson Welles one. I got up and turned on the TV and found more of the same. Then i also realized this had happened about 3 hours before.

I got out to my paratransit bus at 7:31 AM Western time. My driver said no  matter what happened, he was just gonna keep on driving his bus.

I thought the same "Orson Wells" type of movie.

I had been in bed, I was having trouble sleeping, back then I worked nights, a friend called and hollered I need to turn on the TV ASAP!  Needless to say, I never went back to sleep.

as soon as i realized it was no movie my reactions ran the gamut from shock to morbid fascination back to shock

at work, everyone was gathered around a TV and we found out a plane that had been hijacked had been flown into the ground because an Independent Living Center group was on board and had decided to take the plane into their own hands. (we were an Independent Living Center so this was of special interest to us.) (Flight 93)

the executive director of the ILC on board the plane had actually changed the direction of the plane for a little bit. The hijackers did not actually win that one. The plane crashed near Philadelphia instead of being hijacked to Washington DC.

Much of this information was only available later, but some was readily available to us as the ILC's maintain a network of their own.

The passengers on that jet saved a lot of lives.

that was the doing in large part of the ED of the Independent Living Center.

we are people with disabilities, allowing other people with disabilities, to live as independently as possible. I worked for the ILC for 15 years. I fielded a lot of phone calls that thought we were an Assisted Living apartment center or facility.
I retain the philosophy as my own, to this day.
