This just broke in the Louisvilel Courier-Journal with detail around Laoban's death but I can't read the full article.  Vet negligence using outdated meds is what it sounds like.

Underperforming in the breeding shed, WinStar stallion Laoban was given a “Black Shot” injection to boost his energy. He died minutes later. https://courier-journal.com/sports/

…expired B12 was given at five times the recommended dosage, and that iron dextran, one of the vitamin components, had expired in 2012. One or more of the vitamins were supposed to be given intramuscularly but instead were given intravenously.

Disgusting thing for a vet to not check meds and procedure for said meds!

Saw this on twitter earlier but could not access the article since I am not paying for it.  Thank you for calling our attention to the Paulick piece.  What a sickening turn of events for Laoban;  I am so sorry  he died from something so unnecessary and mercenary.  Shame on all of them.

It really upsets me.  I liked Laoban very much and visited him his first year at stud in NY.  His trainer made jambalaya for all of the visitors that day.  The farm was so excited about him.  That was Sequel Stallions.

I’m so pissed  at all of them!  Now that the story is out there maybe the Kentucky Board of Veterinary Examiners will look into this even though the connections did not. The public will want to know how this ineptitude that resulted in the death of the stallion could have happened.

I find it hard that the owners and Winstar wouldn’t investigate, it seems they thought there wouldn’t be an issue with getting the insurance to pay the mortality insurance. And for Winstar to state they’ve been around for twenty years, you would think they would be outraged that this happened?! To just sweep it under the rug  like it’s an everyday occurrence is kind of mind boggling.

They didn’t want this out there.  Shame on them.
