DOROTHY OURS:  Click link to watch War Admiral at Hialeah, winning the March 5, 1938, Widener Challenge Cup:

http://www.gettyimages.ae/detail/video/stagehand-winner-of-the-santa-anita-handicap-stands-in-news-footage/578147364

Toting 130 pounds and breaking from stall 13, the Admiral out-sprinted everyone to the clubhouse turn--you'll see him taking the lead while out near the middle of the track. (Bonus: first few seconds of this film show Stagehand that same day in the Santa Anita winner's circle, after nosing out Seabiscuit in the Big 'Cap.)

Stagehand's owner said he sent his horses to California instead of Florida, that winter, because he didn't want them chasing "that electric rabbit," War Admiral. In other words, he compared War Admiral to the lure that racing Greyhounds couldn't catch.

A nice story about a horse I love, Bal a Bali- but more about his pedigree going

back to Man o War.  I love these stories- very educational and fun to read

Good article.  I am so grateful to Brad Kelley and Calumet for doing so much to keep the tail male Man '0 War line going.  Hard to believe that of all the great stallion's sons, the only one to appear on the top line in our era is War Relic.  I am glad that other sons progeny appear in pedigrees in other ways, too, of course!

Was hoping Theory would make it to Derby since he has MOW both sides.  Sire Gemologist (Tiznow, Cee's Tizzy, Relaunch, etc) and dam Gem Sleuth (Officer, Bertrando, Skywalker, Relaunch, etc).  Not to be, though.  I remember commenting somewhere when Korea bought Officer that at least maybe they appreciate MOW.  And who recently bought Col. John?  I do not like losing these rare gems.

Thanks for posting this.  I love that pedigree and am happy for Bal a Bali's recent successes.  Hoping he has a great year and lots of interest from breeders when he goes to stud.
