Great article on Canonero,never heard nor remembered much of this at the time. Poor horse should not have run the Belmont and would have been more successful afterwards.

Oh gosh, does this bring back memories, and not good ones, either.  He was a lovely horse and that was a heartbreaking race.  Just one of the times when public pressure overcame trainer discretion- others come to mind, too. It is rough to be in such a situation, for sure.  Trainer really has to suck it up, decide for the horse, and stay out of the way of the crap that may be thrown at him/her in the press and maybe even the owners after the decision.
