I thought this is the best place to explain how/why a horse has to be euthanized after breaking a leg.

Thank you for posting this very informative article. The one thing that kind of bothers me is when an owner decides he/she does not feel spending the cost to save the horse's life. We know some of those horses that were euthanized could have been saved if the owner spent the money to do so. that said, I know that not all owners can afford to do that. We think of Barbaro of course and no expense was spared to save him: Same for The Player, and thank goodness that was successful. Whatever we think of Pharoah's owner, he spared no expense to save Paynter.
