This thread is devoted to the horses that have been sacrificed to racing. Some are famous; some like Inesperado, Mending Fences, Pine Island, were well known once; others were always unknowns.  Truth be told, for once, horseracing claims thousands of horses per year on the track, both in the morning hours of training and in the afternoon races, while trying to earn their owners money and fame.  Many if not most of deaths are avoidable – they are not just “bad steps” but are the culmination of the deadly combinations of over-work, drugs, unsound breeding practices, flawed tracks, and year round racing with no hint of a rest.

Many of you have been are currently discussing these issues in a variety of threads on this site..This thread will offer some additional resources as well as a call to action - horseracing must know that we are collectively calling for accountability..

Each week we will post the racehorse death/breakdown toll as well as resources for action. Every horse named on these lists has given their all for humans that seem to regard them as disposable commodities.  The Welfare and Safety Summit addresses many ills in the horse racing industry, but has yet to take any major steps toward cleaning up the sport and giving horses a fighting chance at soundness and longevity.  Posted below are all relevant contacts – starting with those for the Welfare and Safety proposals – followed by a link to all phone numbers, faxes and e-mail addresses for every race track  in North America.

Please be a voice for the horses past and present that cannot speak for themselves.

I remember Ten Cents a Shine. He ran in the 2003 Kentucky Derby (how fast Derby hopefuls are forgotten by the public!) and was a beautiful horse. He went through various trainers and suffered a throat infection as a 3yo, largley dissapeared until he was older, then ran and won on turf. Dissapeared for several more years and reappeared as a steeplechaser. RIP Ten Cents a Shine, I'm lighting a candle.

Okay, this is going to be a difficult one, but I know we need to focus on this issue.  I'm with you.  This is the path of the heart.

OMG I had no idea that so many breakdown. Do these horses end up at the slaughter houses too?

Tbs represent approximately 16% of slaughter bound horses and i suppose this is unfortunately one of the paths there

sth....I have mentioned for months the shady practices in the world of horse racing....I love the sport as far as the grace, beauty, speed of these magnificent animals flying down the track at 40 mph.  I have written to Santa Anita, blood horse, never heard from anybody.  I think this has to be a state by state regulation on what is going on....drugs, absolutely, so these beauties can race and feel no pain, inflicting more damage until......  We have to begin somewhere, once a plan is in place, count me in, call on me.

                            SAFETY FIRST, I WISH

                                     Linda
