Update to add pictures of our Five Saved Kids..

These TB's need your help and they need it fast! We have been given until MONDAY, April 12 to pull these 5 TB's from the Texas Dept of AG/USDA holding pens in Eagle Pass, Texas (on the Texas/Mexico Border).

Since we began saving TB's, this is the FIRST time we have ever been successful in tracking TB's known to be sold for slaughter at auction all the way to the USDA pens and being able to save them at the Mexican border. We can't let these horses down now. :)

We are raising money for their bail, transport and QT for one month. QT will be handled by Lynn Parks (former Director of Marketing with Texas Thoroughbred Association) at a private boarding facility in Austin, Texas. We are working hard to find them permanent homes.

Bail.................$1600...$400/horse..40c/lb   (One of the mares will be paid for by the breeder).
Transport.........$600.....from Mexican border to Austin
QT................  $1500...$300 per horse
Total Needed...$3700

If anyone wants to offer a home/foster that would be great! Payments for help can be sent via PayPal to
loloparks@aol.com.   Please send pp payments as gifts so not fee's will be added.  Snail mail can be used too. Just request address. No amount is too small...$10, $15, $20, $50, $100........

We will have photos tomorrow!

THE STORY...
A couple of us in Texas were asked to assist in helping to track down several thoroughbreds from the Fair Grounds race track in Louisiana that were believed to be heading to slaughter in Mexico.

Last week these thoroughbreds were run through a little known auction in Carencrou, LA. The brand inspector at the auction confirmed they were all tattooed and directly from Fair Grounds and were purchased directly for slaughter to Mexico.

Fair Grounds race track is owned by Churchill Downs Corporate and as such all CHD owned tracks are accredited under the NTRA Surveillance policy. Under this policy thoroughbreds are expected to be provided a soft landing by their race owners once retired. Churchill Downs Corporate also has a zero tolerance policy that no thoroughbred having raced at one of their tracks ends up going to slaughter.

We were asked to get involved by Deb Jones who was working closely with CHD Corporate to identify, track down and pull to safety these horses. Their identities did not become available until a formal written request was made to the Director of Louisiana Brand Commission. Yesterday morning we received the id's and were able to identify them, where and when they last raced.

Unfortunately, NONE of these horses had raced at a track with a zero tolerance policy in place. All had raced at Evangeline, Delta Downs or Lone Star Park.

The Texas Dept. of AG/USDA holding pens located in Del Rio and Eagle Pass, TDA Vets, USDA Vets and Inspectors had been put on alert since last Thursday.

This morning Deb received calls from the USDA and TDA Vets advising her that 5 of them had arrived at the Eagle Pass facility and would be processed for slaughter within 24 hrs. Deb had to explain after verifying their id's that these horses had NOT come from a CHD Corporate track or NTRA accredited track affording them any type of protection from slaughter.

After several urgent phone calls, we were offered these horses for $400 each.

PLEASE HELP US GET THESE HORSES TO THEIR SAFE LANDING!!!
THANK YOU FOR HELPING!!!

I am working with Deb and Lynn on this and will also be accepting donations for bail at my paypal address kcanoval@yahoo.com.  Please send as a gift so no pp fees are added.  Please note the funds are for the TX TB save.

The 05 Mare, She Went Wild, is by the same sire, Wild Zone, as my Gambler.  She is a very well bred girl!

Again, Please help these horses.  They are so close to being slaughtered and we have a chance to save them.    If you prefer to send a donation by snail mail, please pm me and I will send you an address.

Kristi,

Who would have been the person who actually consigned these horses to the auction in LA?  Would it have been the owners, the trainers on instruction from the owner, the trainers unbeknownst to the owner?

It would be interesting if the real name of the person who was ultimately responsible for the decision to have their excess horses slaughtered could be outed.

I think I'd like to see photos of the horses along side the photo and name of the seller to auction posted at race tracks for all to see.

Thanks for helping in this effort.

Linda,

The TX TB was sold by her breeder when she was a yearling.  They are covering her cost of purchase.  They are good people.  Not sure yet who sent her to auction.

The breeder and trainer of the others (LA bred) took them to the auction.  This is currently being worked on.  He WILL be held accountable!  Pedigree query still list the owners/breeders.

I am just wondering about the holding pen. I didn't know they had USDA holding pens for horses. Has this always been? What are they used for?

I need to win the lottery! I would bail all of the horses out and give every rescue a nice bonus. So much for dreaming.
