Speaking of which- what do you think about the move to cut purses for low level claimers? I don't know enough about the claim game to have an opinion

Absolutely needed.  The high purses for these claiming races a direct contributor to the recent high fatality rate.   Good info in the article you posted and more on the Aqueduct thread.

Thanks for your take on it - I'll go look at the Big A thread.

Guess we can hope for a triple crown winner this year - that would certainly be damage control!

Thanks for this - I'm so glad he's going to work horses for a couple of days this time before testing his foot from the starting gate!

I wish him Buena Suerte, as always....

That's just it, and you've got it: "Luck" only showed the warts, the dysfunction and corruption. I've watched most of every episode at least once, and what's left out is the bond between fans and the racing community.  Like what Team Zenyatta did yesterday, sitting out in the cold signing posters because they understand it matters that fans love their mare.  And it doesn't matter that some of those posters are already up on eBay for inflated prices.  What matters is they did it for love.  That was the big ingredient missing at HBO when they envisioned this show.  And starting out with a mean, cynical vision led to hurting horses, in my opinion.

I'm no expert, but I think the lack of understanding of horse handling reflected a lack of understanding of the game.

I wish I could believe it was that benign, but Milch is a race horse owner and they had vets and tech consultants aplenty.  What kind of total idiot thinks it's okay to race sick unfit horses?  They knew better.  I'm no expert and I know better.  I'm waiting for Gary Stevens to say something about this.

I am not sure if Gary will say anything. Unfortunately there are people, such as Ray Paulick, are not happy the show was canceled. He seems just fine with the death of the horses. I wonder what tvg and hrtv think?

It's been interesting watching this giant gulf split our community in half. I don't agree with extremism on either side. (but I'm more likely to err in the direction that cares about the animals)

As far as Gary Stevens goes, I know he's been high on acting since Seabiscuit and he's been trying to break into the motion picture industry (his wife was a production asst. or something) so this must have been a stunning blow to him. For someone who's given up a stellar career, I can totally understand the appeal of a second career in Hollywood and learning a new exciting skill in a team situation with lots of accolades from adoring fans.

I get it. But I wish they would try and "get it" too. -
