Gary Stevens reported it's not riding that hurts, it's the long walks riders must take at Santa Anita to get back and forth from jockey room to track.  I wish GG well, he must have to be very careful about pain meds and it must be very frustrating.  Glad he is being so smart and good to himself.

Garrett said the heel doesn't hurt - it's the tendons and ligaments in his ankle (owwwch):

“Where he put the plate and screws in my heel isn’t what hurts,” he said. “The ligaments and tendons in the front left corner of my ankle are tight, and what I’m concerned about pain-wise is the impact and movement from the horse actually hitting the ground. On the Equicizer, I’m not in any pain.”

Yep, having to restretch those ligament/tendons (they have to move them so as to place the plate and screws in, then reposition or reattach them) is the hardest part...I know because I've have numerous ligament and tendon tears myself, and am having a problem now with my muscles shortening up......stretching is his best friend now, although I'm sure he's not having any fun with it! :-)

Thanks for that explanation - were you the one who was talking about this when he first got injured? I remember someone here at the time saying there were so many ligaments, tendons etc. that would also be effected.

I saw those surgical photos on HRTV, the incision was huge.  Got to be very painful and slow to rehab

Possibly....I'm sure I would have said something about the ligaments/tendons..luckily  I have not had any surgeries for them, but my one son had for his foot, and another couple of people at my tennis club, plus I play with some nurses and doctors too and they always talk about these kind of surgeries.

Well I remember lots of prognostications that made me feel even worse than I did at the time. They were right. It's a really tough injury, from what I've heard since then.

Robbie Albarado had the same injury about the exact same time of the year last year. He was back mid to late march I think...and they're about the same age.

Laffit on HRTV commented "broken heel? Or shark bite?" Yes it did look nasty!

Foot injuries are bad.  Best of luck to Garrett.

I know you do not share my opinion but I love Borel's jockey calendar photo.  It's the first one where the rider's persoanlity really comes through and the man has some yummy arms on him. Mr. March is just fine with me.

Now, am I happy that my birthday month of October features Go-Go in all his jaw-dropping glory?  You bet!
