Pretty darn impressed with Mandaloun. Mike Welsch the clocker said he was his 2nd pick.

Baffert brought in a horse from his “B” Squad who had earned enough points to be in the starting gate. He always has his horses fit and ready to run for the big dance.
Medina Spirit ran them off their feet, set solid fractions leading from gate to wire and whenever Mandaloun, Hot Rod Charlie or Essential Quilty tried to get past he found another gear. I am proud of this horse who doesn’t have a Blue Blood pedigree. Under a different trainer he may not have even earned the points to make it to the Derby.
Congratulations to Baffert’s Team, the Owner, the breeder and Johnny V.
It was one of the more exciting Derby’s in a while.
Most of all I want to congratulate all the other runners and their connections this was the first time for them on the BIG stage with 51,000+ people in the stands and they were professional and we had no meltdowns!
That is INCREDIBLE!

Yesterday’s results may have been different if Essential Quality had a better post position inside more. I think he was 3 wide on the first turn and four on the second. That costs them energy for sure.

All is well the morning after for MS!
The space for more race plaques on Barn 33 at Churchill Downs is running out of room, but trainer Bob Baffert will have to squeeze in another one after he won a record seventh Kentucky Derby (G1) with Medina Spirit May 1.

Oh well, maybe next year "Derby Bob" won't win the Derby ;-) This was his weak lineup year. I really didn't think Medina Spirit had much of a chance, then the rest of the field seemed to have all sorts of things go wrong. It was at least fun to read of MS's modest beginnings.
