The President Is NOT The Nation

Source:https://georgelakoff.com/2017/08/01/the-president-is-the-nation-the-central-metaphor-trump-lives-by/

Donald Trump lives out of a belief that he and the nation are one. In that view the purpose of the government is support the president not the nation. The jpb of his administration, his staff, the various departments and even Congress is to serve and protect and be loyal to the president not the nation.

When you understand that the central metaphor that Trump lives out of, his actions make perfect sense to him and to a greater or lesser extent his core supporters. The question is do they make sense to the majority of the people of this country and are they going to stand for it.

Please read this article by George Lakoff and pass it on to your friends.

The nation is not one person. What benefits one may hurt another. What is ideal to a Republican is not ideal to a Democrat. Otherwise, what part of a chain of command is not working? Yes, politicians serve the people. They also serve the party. The party serves the people? Which people?

What part of what Trump has done is not in line with "the people" that elected him? "The people" elected Trump, and Republicans to the House and Senate. Yes, Democrats complain about Republicans, Republicans complain about Democrats. All in all this is a dysfunctional system.

The people elected Trump therefore, yes, Trump represents the nation.

Trump is about serving Trump. That he serves the interests of the minority of the population that elected him in any way is purely incidental. The people who elected him do have the same belief system, but that in no way says that it is the belief system of the citizenry as a whole.  The real question is do the views of those who elected him and his party represent the beliefs of the population as a whole.  That is a strong possibility given the nature of our society which is based on the primacy of the individual.

Very much agree. Trump SHOULD be representing the nation. What was promised was "everybody covered at a fraction of the cost of ObamaCare". That is not what he delivered which is not what the Senate is delivering.

Once elected Trump represents the whole nation (or should), not just those who elected him. So what is delivered is not necessarily what was promised. If you can't please everyone you've got to please yourself. THAT he is doing.
