At least 12 killed in New York City apartment fire

Twelve people were killed, including an infant, and four were critically injured on Thursday in a fire in an apartment building in New York City's borough of the Bronx, Mayor Bill de Blasio said.

"People died on various floors of the apartment, ranging in age from 1 to over 50," city Fire Commissioner Daniel Nigro told reporters at a news conference with the mayor.

"This tragedy is without question historic in its magnitude."

In a message to New Yorkers, de Blasio said, "Hold your families close and keep those families here in the Bronx in your prayers."

Four Children Among Dozen Dead in Apartment Fire Near Bronx Zoo

Twelve people, including four children, were killed in a fast-moving fire that ripped through a five-story apartment building near the Bronx Zoo on Thursday evening, fire officials familiar with the investigation told News 4 New York.

Among the dead were three girls, ages 1, 2 and 7, an unidentified boy, three women, ages 19, 37 and 63, four unidentified men, and one unidentified woman, according to police.

Officials have not yet released the names of the victims, but fire officials told News 4 at least three of the victims were members of the same family. Another victim, officials said, was found dead in a bathtub after the flames were extinguished.

UPDATE

Young child playing with stove accidentally started Bronx blaze that killed 12 people

A 3-year-old boy fiddling with a stove ignited the raging blaze that killed a dozen people, including four kids under the age of seven, inside a Bronx apartment building, officials said.

The child’s mother, in rushing to safety with her son and her 2-year-old, left their apartment door open — creating a lethal condition where flames shot up the stairway of the five-story building in mere seconds.

“The stairs acted like a chimney, and took the fire so quickly upstairs that people had very little time to react,” FDNY Commissioner Daniel Nigro told a Friday news conference outside the building.

there seems to be  a lot of tragedy lately ...between natural disasters like fire and cold and this great love affair with guns with some deadly results...makes you wonder if  it's always been this way or there just more media coverage now a days.....
