Boy, 11, Drowns After Saving Friend From Frozen Pond
An 11-year-old boy drowned Tuesday after jumping into a Queens, New York, pond to save the life of his friend who had fallen through the ice.
Anthony Perez, 11, and his 12-year-old friend Juan Umpierrez were playing near a pond in Forrest Park around 4 p.m. when Umpierrez went onto thin ice and fell through, according to a New York City Fire Department Facebook post.
Perez, who was on land at the time, followed his friend onto the ice to try to help him. Perez was able to push Umpierrez to safety, but he became trapped beneath the ice, unable to get out. Umpierrez, meanwhile, ran home to get help.
"Members (of the FDNY) had to physically, with their hands, break through the ice and chop the ice so they could get to the area that they knew the child would most likely be in. They had to go underneath to get the child," FDNY Deputy Chief George Healy said at the scene.
