The quaker parrot — sometimes called a monk parrot, or a quaker or monk parakeet — is an intelligent, playful, often talkative, and regularly mischievous bird species. Quakers can make a great addition to your family, but they do require frequent and active care to thrive. If you are considering the acquisition of a quaker parrot, mull over your commitment level; your ability to provide for the bird’s well-being; and your tolerance for noise, messiness, and missing trinkets. In the right environment, a quaker can be a lovable companion for years (or even decades) to come.

Where Can You Own A Quaker Parrot?

Quaker parrots are medium-sized parrots native to South America, though there are flocks of naturalized quaker parrots living in areas throughout the United States, including Texas, Florida and New York. In some states, quaker parrots are illegal, as some believe they are a threat to agriculture or that they could potentially establish a naturalized flock and threaten native species. A parrot safari in... Brooklyn?


Brooklyn (CNN) — Tourists are often warned in New York City not to stop and look up. But on one street where a tree grows in Brooklyn, looking up is encouraged.


You might just catch a rare sight in the bustling big city: beautiful green Quaker parrots, also known as monk parakeets. (They are hard to find, rarer than spotting Tony Danza strolling down Broadway.)
