I was in my room at International House, Berkeley; I was working on a Ph.D. at the time. It was a Sunday afternoon, if I recall aright, and I was watching on my small b&w TV set.

Crazy fact: NASA has just three people left in the astronaut corps who have piloted a vehicle in space: Eric Boe, Doug Hurley, and Butch Wilmore. They were all space shuttle pilots. No shuttle commanders remain at NASA.
