When I was a kid, and my father was not traveling on business, he'd declare a day especially for each of his children, to go where we wanted and do as we liked.  My brother always opted for amusement parks and such.  My choice was usually the Hall of Science at Griffith Observatory.  I liked the sectioned meteorites with their Widmanstätten figures, and the "Jacob's Ladder" spark gap, and the big Tesla coil.

I did indeed.  Interesting experience last summer, too: I was out in Spokane visiting a friend who lives in nearby Cheney.  They do a big outdoor "Royal Fireworks" concert there.  I was listening to the Handel and watching the skyrockets, when suddenly a big meteor streaked across the sky, above the rising moon.  I guess we earthlings weren't the only ones letting off fireworks that evening!
