They lost their empire, so I guess that is punishment, but have there ever been formal apologies to the countries they invaded and the consequences to the indigenous peoples?

Columbus statue smashed up in US
Surveillance video has shown a man climbing a Columbus statue in Connecticut. The man hit the head with an object. He runs away and then returns to climb the statue again and smashes the head off the statue.
