Indian police shoot dead four men who were suspected of raping and killing a 27-year-old veterinarian in the city of Hyderabad.

Let me guess - the real culprits are from wealthy families, so a corrupt police force picked up four other men, took them to the crime scene at the dead of night and murdered them.

Case solved.

Well, we will never know.

But the courts are backed up, so the men may have never faced any justice.

Apparently this happens a lot.

The family of the victim were happy with the outcome.

Societies have great trouble balancing the rights of people of different economic status - India has clearly not got it even partially right.

At least if these poor men had not been murdered their places in prison would have been filled and more innocents couldn't be mopped up and abused there.

The US has never got it right and matters have been deteriorating sharply in the UK as wealthy people and corporations throw their weight around.

A court in India sets an execution date for four men convicted of the 2012 gang rape and murder of a woman on a New Delhi bus, in an attack that sent shockwaves across the world.

No mention that in India there must be grave suspicion that innocent poor people have been convicted for crimes committed by others who have pulled strings.

Lengthy trials, often a result of fewer courts and judges, tend to delay convictions, leaving poor, disillusioned victims with little money and patience to pursue the cases.

No angry protests from us that victims are expected to pursue such cases.

And no protests that our own judicial system is being similarly corrupted by victim statements - encouraging the impression that justice and the courts are for the wealthy and don't deliver for the poor.

California and Texas will be loggerheads about water very soon and God only knows the methods they will use.
