That is an interesting observation - I waited out on the front porch for the firemen to show up and could very plainly hear the alarms. Not one person popped their heads of their doors to see what was happening, and there are 3 houses directly across from us, and of course one on each side. No one was interested. I've lived in the same house since 1981 and never had a trick or treater. It is not part of local culture. Occasionally, I used to have 'Penny for the Guy' kids, but none in the last couple of decades. Have had the occasional carol singers, but in the past. Nothing this century.
Times they are a changing.

Australians also have an inherent need to reject anything they deem to be "too American".
Also, it was a miserable night. I think it hailed in the morning.

It just wasn't 'celebrated' where I lived. The main event for us kids was Bonfire night. and 'penny for the guy' and bonfire building were the important things.

An icon of determination and sense. Well, climate sense at least.
