while a British epidemiologist explains the cost of not locking the UK down earlier.

Ferguson serves on the committee advising the UK Gov. He's probably right that locking the UK down sooner would have saved thousands of lives. Unfortunately the scientists didn't have the evidence to recommend that happen until a week later.

I don't see this as a reason to blame anyone. It's just the way it happened.

;-) Every general would be able to win every battle if he had hindsight and his opponent didn't.

Worrying but inevitable.  Even a country that's free of the virus, like NZ, will experience a second wave as soon as tourists can travel there.

I was just gobsmacked that China had to close down another wet market due to another outbreak.

Is it stubborn refusal to accept a mistake, or just stupidity?

Or, insanity - "repeating the same actions over and over and expecting different results".

Unfortunately, wet markets are a traditional part of Chinese life. They're places where meat and fish are sold. I understand everything used to be killed and butchered on the spot and the meat of animals we would never eat was sold.

Apparently after SARS, much stricter regs were brought in to make meat markets more hygienic and restrict the 'killing on the spot' tradition and also largely prevent the sale of exotic animals.

After this outbreak, I would expect Chinese regs to become even tougher.

The fact that another outbreak occurred at all has to allow the question: "is culture and tradition more important than global health?"

The virus doesn't give a shit about Political correctness.
