See: defense-aerospace.com:

Thales and Army Headquarters have started jointly researching, developing and designing the next generation Close Combat Family of Weapons. To support Army’s emerging requirements this will include the next generation close combatant assault rifle, light machine gun and associated ammunition. Supporting Army’s strategy to establish and maintain a capability edge for the dismounted combat capability, the joint research and development program will focus on new, disruptive technologies to radically advance the relationship between soldiers and small arms, ensuring Australian soldiers are equipped to anticipate and defend against emerging threats.

I thought it wasn't that long ago that they adopted an updated AUG. Presumably close attention will be paid to whatever the US Army is up to...

Makes sense. 135gr @ 3000fps will have excellent stopping power against Emu's.

Couldn't resist.

In reality I imagine its a matter of keeping up with the Jones's plus the massive deterioration in Australia - China relations thats prompting it.

I'm pretty sure we could fix it by sending them our idiot PM's head in a box.

And yes, Australia really could manage with a larger round for specialist applications. Commiting to the current US shitshow seems excessive though.

The EF88 was not intended as a long term solution.

LAND 159 Lethality Systems Project is envisaged to replace all the ADF small arms systems, mortars, grenades and launchers, DFSW, command detonated munitions (we don’t use “land mines”) and more.

NIOA has contracted with Winchester for ammunition manufacturing and supply from Lake City.

NGSW is definitely of interest to ADF, but True Velocity cased ammo even moreso, based on public source articles.

I laugh too, but I had to take care of 2 emus my relatives bought at our livestock auction. I was glad when they left.
