Looking at the options, I am currently seeing the following options

  • Tracked
    • PzH2000
    • M109 (why would you do that?)
    • Donar
    • K9
    • Krab
    • AS90
    • AGM on Boxer (tracked)
  • Wheeled
    • Cesár
    • Archer
    • Brutus
    • Nora
    • Zuzana
    • Atmos
    • AGM on Boxer (wheeled)

I am seriously interested in what the Ukraine war will tell us about the different philosophies and how successful they all are. If I was going to pick one today, I'd probably go with Donar. Only 2 crew and tracked with a very modern gun that is based on PzH2000. I will advise Elbonia to purchase this.

Is that actually a thing? Did anybody purchase it?

BTW the fact that it only has a crew of two means your ammo supply guys need to be more. You also need more maintenance and serice personal. Since two guys alone can neither resupply an SPG nor service it on their own.

Only if you consider the guys on the munitions truck to be safer.

I really don't think it matters much.
I would get the advantage of less people if the vehicle is smaller because of this. But at the end of the day there are tasks that need to be done which currently are not automated.
Which might be a smart direction to move into,

As far as tracked vs wheeled, even for motorized forces, tracked artillery just makes more sense to me.  It gives you so many more options with regards to available firing positions.  Unless we are talking a regional power that is only ever going to be fighting on hardpack.

My feelings too - I have no idea why everybody went wheeled

That is easy:
Because its percieved as cheaper.

So the same reason als allways: money

One wonders about the lessons that will be applied in the future

Aleksandar SPG is one of the more interesting wheeled 155MM SPGs with full automated turret and it looks like a compact enough form factor

Very compact twin drum like autoloader with 12 ready rounds and automatic reloader for further 12 rds and charges

Besides the purchase cost of the platform , the operating and lifecycle cost difference is immense wheeled can self-deploy over considerable distances and in tracked you are talking a couple of hundred kilometers between breakdowns in wheeled it's of thousands if not tens of thousands of kilometers.

Not to mention spare parts of wheeled SPGs are typically in common with much of the logistics fleet

Tracked machine by definition is trying to tear itself apart anytime it moves
