Came across a wonderfully OCD review of 2021 production lot M855A1:

https://www.ar15.com/forums/ar-15/M855A1-Accuracy-and-Velocity/16-783286/

Check out the whole review which has a ton of pics and info.

But the short list for current velocity:

So it loses less than 200 fps for the 5.5" shorter barrel.

Not that much, I'd say, especially within 300 meters.

The claimed MV for the M855A1 is 960 m/s from a 20" barrel, and 905 m/s from a 14.5" barrel, so those measured values are very close.

Now, they just need a sleeker bullet with a much higher BC than the 0.149 C7 of the M855A1.

EDIT: contrary to what is written in the AR15 forum, the M855A1 is a NATO load (since 2019...)

Given the cartridge OAL, how can the bullet be made any sleeker than it is?

whats the ME in in ft lbs for these high velocityes? (from 20 barrel). would a 224 valkyrie be overbore if applied to MGs?

why dont they just make the bullet more pointy, without increasing the ogive length
