However what caught my eye was that they will use these polymer disintegrating links, which should offer a good little weight savings:

Yes, that's worth doing if the polymer links are strong enough.  They did some experimentation with 7.62mm plastic links at Shrivenham some years ago, and found they sort of worked but the links broke as they were fed through. Making them stronger meant making them thicker, which then caused problems with feeding. 

 AREX makes some for use with training ammo, but of course the plastic training rounds are much lighter so put less stress on the links.
