Adults Should All Be Reading Out Loud

Back when books were scarce and expensive, storytelling and reading out loud were forms of art. People would travel all over to tell stories to one another. That was how stories were passed down through generations. More >

I don't read out loud to myself, but I do read to my preschoolers every day. I've also found myself talking out loud to myself while texting. It's like I need to say the word in order to type it! Yet I don't have that problem while typing here on a keyboard. Hmmmmmm.

No "Sort of" answer!

I sub-vocalize sometimes in interesting literature.

The first time I read G. K. Chesterton's Ballad of the White Horse, I actually went outside and sat on the porch so I could read aloud without disturbing anyone in the house.  It is just so beautiful it demands to be read aloud.

"Before the gods that made the gods
Had seen their sunrise pass
The White Horse of the White Horse Vale
Was cut out of the grass.

Before the gods that made the gods
Had drunk at dawn their fill
The White Horse of the White Horse Vale
Was hoary on the hill."

That's beautiful!  There are some things .. like poetry... that is so much better when the words are released into the universe.

When I was in college, we were told to read our term papers out loud - to ourselves if nobody else was around.  They said it would help us spot errors... however, I could never do it. Reading out loud to myself just didn't seem like a sane idea. And, actually, by the time I had finished writing a term paper, I was far too close to the subject to spot any errors.  I didn't have a week left before due dates to let the papers cool down either.  Two or three days, at most.  So, I did a once-over editing job the night before the paper was due... and silently read through the text a minimum of three times before I changed anything.  I mostly did okay with grades.

The last time I regularly read anything out loud was when my kids were little. Once they were old enough to read for themselves, I gradually stopped reading to them.  Years later, I realized that I really do not care for the sound of my own voice...

do not care for the sound of my own voice...

I think that's it in  nutshell for me ....   I have never liked hearing my own voice. I heard it once in a recording and I honestly did not know it was MY voice until someone told me.  Except to my kids when they were very young, I have never read out loud.
