Throughout the history of western literature, and now more than ever, vegetarians, vegetarianism, and their correlates – animal rights, human health, the meat industry, and climate change – have informed the gamut of literary genres.

It's true, according to the Bible Adam and Eve were created vegetarians.

But we should not ignore that the fall created predation throughout nature
and humankind evolved as omnivores.

Also, Charlotte, in Charlotte's Web, was a carnivore like all spiders.
According to the animated movie, I never read the novel..:-)

BTW, I find it curious that the Guardian is using American politics to solicit donations.

I'm not and never have been a vegetarian or vegan or any of that group.  Actually, I'm  not that fond of most veggies.  I need meat !  :-)

I've noticed that a lot of media places I visit are asking for donations.  I'm wondering if 'fake' news' have really hurt them.

I think that Japhy Ryder in Kerouac's "The Dharma Bums" was a vegetarian...

I could be a vegetarian very easily if I had to do my own slaughtering of animals and cleaning them. I can dig clams and boil crab as they do not have blood

> as they do not have blood

'Civilization' and its attendant specialization is robbing us
of life skills needed when the power goes off.

Not to mention the desire to use those skills..:-)

I think that is very astute. One reason I make sure my propane tanks used for camping are full. Rice tastes a lot better when cooked.

I  used to clean fish all the time when I was a kid.  I could probably still handle that now.  But there's no way I could kill, clean, and eat a bambi ...or a bunny rabbit .. or elsie the cow  :-)
