Finally getting going on this. We're all amazed at how rough the original work was. 80+ years has taken a toll, but the details and forming are horrible. At some point (3 different times, we're guessing), someone went over the whole thing, face screwing. Three different types of screws. Some are steel flat heads. Most of them have deteriorated away. They may have been from the original installation. Then there are two types of stainless screws. Some of the 1x sheathing under the copper is completely gone. We'd hoped to get some good patina'd copper off of this to resell/re-use, but it's swiss cheese. also, the spire is copper, but the gabled part is painted terne metal. Not sure if that was original or if the lower part was replaced and painted to match the patina of the copper spire. Probably the 2nd option.

Looking forward to following this one.

That is rough!

Also, I have the original plans and the top of the spire is supposedly 175' above the top of the sanctuary foundation which is several feet above street level. Our lift has a 150' reach meaning to your finger tips standing in it, straight up. we're 30+ feet off center and can get within about 10' of the top. Either the lift is taller than advertised or the spire is not as tall as it was supposed to be.

CU,

Wow! Do you measure and then go back to the shop? This should be good. Thanks.

Josh & Blake are up in the basket tearing off, screwing all the sheathing down (installed with cut nails) and replacing bad/missing boards, re-fastening the 2x on the hips, and drying in. They think they can pull those vents off and bring them back to the shop. They can reach probably 70% from the current boom location. Once they get a section removed, they'll measure and I'll start fabricating. When we get everything we can reach from this setup, we'll move to the other side. Have to bring in a crane sitting in the street for the last 10-12 ft.

Jobs like this don't come around often. I'm catching some shade from other local companies about getting it. One guy asked me how I got the job after telling me he didn't have a clue how to bid it. Well, Mr Smarty Pants Communist, I actually submitted a proposal. You cannot win if you do not play.

North Mill St 2 blocks off Main. Let me know if you're coming. I'm there sporadically right now. Lot's of good lunch places nearby.

Bring your harness.
