Dung Beetles   Ladybugs and other Beetles

It's funny how we think of insects, particularly beetles in terms of common names. The Dung Beetle  is a fellow most people have heard of, but do they know there are different dung beetles? Would they know how many different ones?

Take a look at this page https://bugguide.net/node/view/3670

Kingdom Animalia (Animals)
Phylum Arthropoda (Arthropods)
Subphylum Hexapoda (Hexapods)
Class Insecta (Insects)
Order Coleoptera (Beetles)
Suborder Polyphaga (Water, Rove, Scarab, Long-horned, Leaf and Snout Beetles)
Superfamily Scarabaeoidea (Scarab, Stag and Bess Beetles)
Family Scarabaeidae (Scarab Beetles)
Subfamily Scarabaeinae (Dung Beetles)
Tribe Onthophagini
Genus Onthophagus
OK so we see by that chart that Dung beetles are a subfamily of scarab beetles (and most people have at least a passing knowledge of those from the days of Cleopatra). From that subfamily the many species are broken into Tribes and then Genus.... so just looking at that last class: Onthophagus on this Wikispecies page LOOK how many species there are! https://species.wikimedia.org/wiki/Onthophagus

Isn't that amazing!  I've seen it stated that there are 400,000 KNOWN species of beetles with scientists estimating the real number as high as 4-8 MILLION. Mind boggling!

Two dung beetles discussing their work day...

Steve: I'm PROUD of the work I accomplished today!

Carl: You are proud of pushing shit around?

Steve: Of course!

Carl: Yeah, well I am so dung with being a beetle!

I'm sorry, but yes - I had to do that

Nice list material, ask anyone! (Kidmagnet) said:

In the end, isn't that really what we all do?
