Pioneering Online Community Site Delphi Forums Celebrates 30 Years Online

North Andover, MA (February 1, 2013) -- Delphi Forums is kicking off a month-long celebration to mark 30 years of hosting online conversations. The site traces its origins to the Delphi online service, which debuted in 1983.

The service that became Delphi was launched in 1981 as an online encyclopedia. It was soon expanded to include forums and chat and the Delphi name was first used February 15, 1983. This home for groups organized around shared interests lives on today as Delphi Forums, a vibrant network of online communities.

Delphi Forums has survived and flourished by re-inventing itself, first by moving its communities from a low-speed dial-up service to the Web in the 1990's, and most recently when former CEO Dan Bruns acquired Delphi Forums in 2011 and embarked on a series of technology upgrades aimed at increasing member engagement and community growth.

"It's true that the Delphi that launched in 1983 was very different from today's internet," Bruns said, "but one thing remains the same: places like Delphi Forums provide a friendly, comfortable setting for people to share common interests and passions and to build lasting friendships. If we keep that simple truth in mind, we have a terrific legacy to build on going forward."

Delphi Forums' success today is rooted in its long history of online milestones. Delphi hosted some of the first online communities -- the earliest form of social media. Delphi was the first service to provide national consumer access to the Internet in 1992. A few years later, Delphi became one of the first services to provide a home to communities on the World Wide Web. Delphi has been going strong ever since, and in 2003, acquired pioneering chat site Talk City (eventually incorporating those communities into Delphi Forums).

Today, Delphi Forums is home to groups discussing topics ranging from knitting to politics to motorcycles. All of the forums are created and managed by Delphi Forums members. Unlike other forum hosting hubs, Delphi Forums members can use their accounts to visit any public forum in the network. Most Delphi Forums members participate in multiple communities.

Because of its long history, Delphi Forums members can turn to some of the world's most experienced online community experts for help and advice. One of those experts is Walt Howe, who has been with Delphi since 1986. "Many online community services have come and gone in the past 30 years. I have been on most of them, and I am delighted to say that my favorite community, Delphi, has outlasted them all," Howe said.

Throughout the month of February, Delphi Forums is marking the anniversary with special events and discussions, including a 24-hour chat-a-thon February 15 & 16.
