I think a lot of it is their loyalty.  They will take a lot of abuse and still only want their handler.  A dog with less loyalty would be willing to escape and find somebody new.

We got our 2nd shepherd from a rescue. She had been tied to a poll, was skin and bones, and her collar had become embedded in her neck. She made a great recovery. When we got her the only problem was her nose. She kept jumping up in the kennel and hitting her nose.  After we got her, there was no more cage so her nose healed.  Great dog!
