NEW DELHI (AP) — India's Parliament passed a sweeping new law Thursday to protect women against sexual violence in response to a fatal December gang rape and beating of a young woman on a bus in New Delhi.

The new law, which still requires the president's signature before it becomes official, makes stalking, voyeurism and sexual harassment a crime. It also provides for the death penalty for repeat offenders or for rape attacks that lead to the victim's death. The law also makes it a crime for police officers to refuse to open cases when they receive complaints of sexual attacks.

A 15 year old rape victim has been sentenced to be flogged 100 times for having sex outside of marriage (in a separate case from the rape.) The rapist is the girl's step father. More from Global Voices.

Petition to the president of the Maldives:

To President Mohammed Waheed Hassan:

As concerned global citizens, we call on you to do more to protect vulnerable women and children. We welcome your government’s initial intervention in the case of the 15-year-old rape victim, but real justice will only be delivered when you end the practice of flogging in the Maldives, and change the law so that it better protects the victims of rape and sexual abuse.

There are two cases of rape resulting in suicide after publication of photos in the news right now, one from Canada, one from the U.S.

Anonymous has taken on the Rehtaeh Parson rape case and the massive movement, Unite Against Rape is growing stronger by the day. Rehtaeh Parson, was a 17-year old girl who was gang-raped when she was 15, then scorned and tormented –to death. She committed suicide last week. No one has been charged, but the Nova Scotia authorities, after public outcry, have now reopened the case. Earlier in the week, in desperation and sadness, Rhea’s father reached out for help on a public blog site.

“How is it possible for someone to leave a digital trail like that yet the RCMP don’t have evidence of a crime? What were they looking for if photos and bragging weren’t enough?

Seven months after 15-year-old Audrie Pott posted a grim Facebook message and hanged herself near Santa Clara, California, police arrested three 16-year-old boys on sexual battery charges late Thursday, amid allegations that she was "savagely assaulted by her fellow high school students while she lay on a bed completely unconscious" — only to have cellphone photos of the attack get shared amongst the 1,400 students at Saratoga High School.

Did These Torrington Rape Documents Feed Social Media Victim Shaming?

The arrest warrants for two 18-year-olds accused of raping two 13-year-old girls were unsealed late Friday afternoon, two months after the alleged attack, and they paint a very different picture of what happened than the story we've been hearing from the Torrington police — the same story students have been using to blame the alleged victims.
