Because in 1788 we were an agricultural society.  Voters were farmers.  November so it was after the harvest and wouldn't keep them from their crops.  Tuesday so they could drive into town on Monday after spending Sunday at church.

Where in the Hell are the courts on this? Why doesn't someone move to take away their tax-exempt status?

I know, I know...but this infuriates me! If I were in one of the churches and that was read to me I would be enraged and the whole congregation would know it on the spot!

Because what he did, while it seems like clear intimidation to us, isn't strictly illegal. Besides... I don't think the U.S. government is too anxious to start prosecuting the Catholic church.

You're right, it's not illegal. But it is against the separation of church and state...the basis of why churches aren't taxed. So let's tax them. Works for me!

Prosecuting the Catholic Church--why not?
Child molesting
racketeering
fraud
misuse of funds (IRS)
unlawful use of tax exemption

and probably a lot more.
