One wouldn't think a 4 horse race could be so exciting but this race had an electrifying stretch duel. The great Stradivarius, now 7, under a very savvy ride by Dettori, shows what he's made of by coming back after being headed by Spanish Mission to win his 3rd Lonsdale Cup. You can see the horse giving everything he has to win.
Great race!! Strads got him by a 1/2 head.
You could tell the leader had nothing left down the stretch. Was this a 2 mile race?
2 miles & 56 yards to be precise.
John Gosden made a good point about both Frankie's ride & Stradivarius temperament. He said if Dettori moves on the fading leader too soon, then Strad thinks it's job over when he goes by & he'll start to slow down. So the nuance of the ride is that he moved at the right time to take the leader so the horse coming up, Spanish Mission, wouldn't simply go past as Strad slowed down (thinking he had done his job) Interesting.
Once Stradivarius became fully aware of Spanish Mission, he simply would not let that one win.
