An historically great race and only 5 entrants could be scared up?  I know Flightline is tough but I went back to 1998, just for fun, and this is the shortest Met Mile field in that date range.  I'm quite sure if I kept going back, this year's edition would still be the shortest field.

I mean, even the supersonically fast Ghostzapper had a field of 6.

Flightline could be due for a letdown. I mean when a contender looks invincible, strange things are known to happen. That's why they run the races.

Of course, anyone might win.  That wasn't my point.  It's an anemic edition of a storied race.  

It used to be special, run on its own on Memorial Day.  Now it's just lost/ignored, buried in the Belmont Stakes undercard... Just saw this tweet from Jay Privman which explains why this race (and the Belmont Stakes too) have short fields:

I rarely agree with Privman but in this instance, he nails it.  Graded Stakes Comm. would rather have their fingernails pulled out than to put together a worthwhile program.

At one time, they used to breed to race.  Now, they race to breed.  Leads to what you pointed out:  The Met Mile is no longer treated as the great race it once was.  The Met Mile should not be an undercard race.

That's why I get most of my racing kicks from the European and Asian/Australian sport.   They are far more careful with what they do and do not do.

Flightline is the new monster horse.

Used him as the one single cold in Pick 5. RACE 10 I heavied  up for a long horse. And Prat was due.
