Then there's this wiseguy. He puts "Ph.D" after his name... which to me reads Piled Higher and Deeper.
https://www.thoroughbreddailynews.com/letter-to-the-editor-armen-antonian/
Let me summarize what he said:
"There are lies, damned lies, and statistics."
He tries to fudge around the stats to suggest dirt is as safe as synthetic because somehow Santa Anita (which at a time had a bad reputation), Keeneland (same; recall 2015?), and Del Mar had almost no breakdowns in a convenient-for-him 2 year stretch. But not once did he say "However, breakdowns at Woodbine, Presque Isle, Gulfstream inner, and Golden Gate are higher during the same 2 years..." because he knows he can't.

PhD in cherry picking.
Quick fix? No. Running on turf and Tapeta is the fastest way to save the most horse lives. The other stuff we have in the pipeline with HISA/HIWU will take years to undo the bad practices and the savings in horse lives will be incremental.
He's regurgitating every argument for dirt that I have heard many, many times over the years.

Other than the whining and bitching from speed figures players who suddenly found their system would need reworked for synthetic.... *ahem* Beyer *ahem* LouDiamonds *ahem* (fill in the rest) [he complained about slower times but didn't go with the handicapping issues... maybe he needs to compare Tapeta with Poly... Polytrack is very "spongy" stuff and led to slow times, but Tapeta is not like that at all and the times on it would be comparable to dirt]

Long story short, the usual freak accident, "bad step", however you want to call it. But which happens more often on dirt than on turf or synthetic...

This was a turf fatality. But, your point is correct, nonetheless. No questions answered in a rather flimsy article. I suppose if the KHRC is only giving out tidbits what else can we expect.

Just read Art Collector put down to laminitis. Never heard any mention of that till this news

Big loss. Tex posted it here on the day of. I think Paulick may have had it, too. I read it here.

Just read on The Paulick Report, laminitis claimed the life of Cave Rock!!
Two promising horses dead a day and a half of one another...sad!
RIP Cave Rock

Laminitis is a scourge. The only hopeful note is that more and more money is going into research to identify causes through better diagnostics and earlier detection and intervention, new drug therapies being tested and some progress is already being reported.
Easy to look up online if one is interested enough to do so.

Might be a good idea to start imposing meaningful fines on the cheats and use the money to fund research
