Wow, Mike Repole complains that he loses money every time he enters a horse in the Derby because he hasn't finished 1st or 2nd...
https://www.thoroughbreddailynews.com/is-the-derby-purse-fair-opinion-from-the-industry/
Maybe he should STFU and try to win the Saudi Cup, Dubai World Cup, Arc, or Japan Cup if the Derby isn't paying the bills...

Lol he’s losing money because his trainer has been getting Rich off him for the better part of a decade lol Let’s look at how the season started with Forte as the best 3 year old. Lol what has he won? 3 preps for classic races. There are 3 Pletcher trained 3 year olds with this record every year. Pletcher has been a pre mature ejaculator his entire career. Lol but his share of the breeding money for another sire that will produce more 2 year old champions will come in handy I’m sure.

Typical Pletcher news flash - Forte battling quarter-cracks. Feel sorry for that colt. He's been mismanaged and still able to run some good races. Talented and very well put together. [the horse, not Repole LOL]

He didn't say he's losing money full stop (i.e. his entire racing operation doesn't turn a profit), but that with all the costs to get to the Derby he's losing.
That's why it's called STAKES racing (short for Sweepstakes) -- you bet a little to win a lot, but there's no guarantee you'll win, ever.
I know we knock his choice of trainer but he figures Pletcher's won it before, surely he can win one for him too. So he'll stick with him and spend lots of money on horseflesh to try to get it done.
One can only imagine how Forte would have turned out if he was trained by somebody else. If he was with Mott the plan would be, forget the BC Classic let's prep for Saudi and/or Dubai (which would make perfect sense since I doubt Cody's Wish runs again after the BC, Godolphin will retire him right after).

Repole is a big fish in New York. In Kentucky and California he’s a minnow, and just one entry in a full field of grade 1 horses.

Horse racing isn't Shark Tank.
Launching a 2 year old horse into a career where they can be successful---- isn't the same as launching Vitamin Water and Body Armour into a clammering-for-more consumerist market, selling to generations who were brought up by marketers and advertisers to buy buy buy.
He wants to "improve industry conditions"? Start with making life more livable for the backside workers, exercise riders, and grooms, those who have the harshest working conditions and hours, and with whom the horses spend the most hours in a day.
HISA already beat him to it for other stuff.
