As you known, Nowyouknow, Saratoga schedules many many Cards with races for NY horses only and a considerably short meet. Numerous owners , add grass races; on a given day barn could easily schedule into a card as the racing Secty offered it.
A forty % return can be easily accomplished by a mere place bet that pays $2.80. My mentors schooled ..get paid for your handicapping (d)
At the Spa, there are at least six 100,000 $ races for Two yr olds and limited to fields of 10 maximum.
Grasses galore with barns moving up and down perhaps sideways in distance, price and allowances. New York is the richest state program. Ánd if one gets their trainer to run At the Spa as often as possible it provides neat vacation expenses write~offs. As always we must begin with the premise racing is a zero sum game for those involved.
The explanation that you pointed out in your post is right on point.
Say they have 5 races at $100,000 per purse that's $500,000 up for grabs and a Trainer like C C Brown with multiple horses in each race is most likely to walk away with the lions share of the purse money no matter how his horses finish.
Couple that with the expense write offs it all makes sense but it's still disgusting for the betting public.
That's why I created this interactive blog to expose Trainers like C C Brown

When Saratoga runs 2017, they publish all the charts and stats for the 2016 meet.
I would think that 3 wins in a day by a trainer would be a big deal.
And at best, perhaps the same owner of the three wins might be two. But, how is the public hit-up. These are large fields with shippers from all over, firsters, yada yada. Pull up when American Ph lost the Travers and go back three races and make a pick four. 7 furlongs 3 yr olds (Run Happy about 8 deep, Then the chalk for the 7 fl older dirt 1-1, then the chalk for the grass 1-1, and AP runs out. This is not a dead nuts game = $10,000 pick four. Two months in to 2017, predictable in the barn sizes, in order *Bafff,Todd ,Asmussen, Jerkens , Maker, O'Neill. Tons of asst trainers and details. Not many in this game exceed the 33% Delta in Wins etc. I get paid for handicapping the old fashion way.
60% of $12 million
What I was focusing on was a day in particular for C C Brown at Saratoga.
I'm not sure of what Saratoga publishes in terms of charts and stats but on 8-27-2016 last year C C Brown put out 18 horses in 1 day.
For those that were part of the betting public that day, if they were unaware that he had so many horses entered, they most probably played his horses thinking that they would be competitive and lost their money.
He only had 2 winners on that day with 5 place finishes and a 3rd.
He had 10 horses in 5 stakes races with 1 win and 3 place finishes.
To me he was clearly entering horses just to pick up purse money less than half of all his horses hit the board that day.
The Saratoga stats may show him as the leading Trainer in terms of money earned last year but his return on investment for the betting public was clearly negative.
Most seasoned players use more than a trainer. It is one criteria. And the results that day were simply occurrences. And IMHO the one or two days a yr visitor to The Spa would not focus on trainers. They would not even be able to explain the conditions of the race and would proly' just have the house program. We do agree that owners, trainers @ jocks are after purse $.
Enjoy the trip...life's and racing (d)

I've hit some very good values at Oaklawn, noticing when an "errant" trainer shows up with a high-odds ship in. People get so invovled in the top trainers/top jocks at OP, they often don't see these being spotted to win. Usually pay about $45 too.
I've also had a lot of luck playing high odds horses to place......and they pay twice or 3x what the winner pays.
Indeed! The question is ...Why did this trainer ship all the way here..what's he doing in this race? You are spot on that placement is ..where can Team get a paycheck. Just heading out to the races .. Like Oaklawn but sometimes the DRF does not include in composite paper, so get Pps separate. Enjoy the racing today (d)
R R Rodriguez has 6 entered today at Aqueduct
Let's see how he does with these today I'm interested to see if #7 Broken Engagement will do anything for him today.
R R Rodriguez horses didn't do much today
However #7 Broken Engagement paid $16.60 across the board
