I only looked at a 2 week period and didn't look at *every* race. It's rather alarming. Do you think track maintenance is getting a clue?
Is anybody else "concerned" --- surely we can't be "going thru horses" at this rate?
Storming Candy - fell, vanned
Dixie Ballet - broke down, vanned
Three eclipse -pulled up walked off
Tattenham vanned off
Secret Affair pulled up vanned off
Mandy D pulled up walked off
March 9th: DNF or vanned off a rather large number:
Run Macho Run
Mastery - vanned
Nowalking - pulled up vanned off
What are the chances that we see Mastery on the racetrack again? Off to the breeding shed?
According to the Equine Injury Database, their rate for 2016 was 3.14/1000 starts, approximately twice the average for the United States.
Trainer Bob Baffert reports that surgery on Mastery performed this afternoon at Santa Anita "went very well" and that the 3-year-old colt is back in his stall at Baffert's barn at Santa Anita.

Thanks. I expect the 2017 rate to go up if things continue like they have this month. Hopefully not.
