... the Jeff Ruby Steaks (G3). And that isn't a typo!
How cleaver...I mean clever! Hah!
I don't know if that's the worst name for a stakes race, but it's bad in that it almost suggests the last place horse will be on the menu (after 30 days of dry aging...)
I definitely wasn't a fan of the Derby being "presented by Yum! Brands"... (who was?)
Who the hell is Jeff Ruby in the scheme of things, anyway? I mean, aside from a local steak baron?
If it's not the worst name, The Jeff Ruby Steaks has got to be worst 3 of all time.
As far as Yum! goes, no one will miss them as sponsor, I should hope.
I've never been to a Jeff Ruby steakhouse but it makes me think immediately of Jack Ruby, as if it is mob-connected.
This race is among the leaders for name changes. In earlier years it was the Jim Beam Stakes, then it was something else before becoming the Spiral Stakes. I am probably forgetting a few incarnations. But it has produced a few good horses. Didn't Animal Kingdom run there? And Hard Spun I think.
I thought of Jack Ruby, too.
I think the race was also sponsored by Lane's End. I do remember Hard Spun winning it & Animal Kingdom plus quite a few really nice horses over the years.
I hope this doesn't set a precedent. Next, The Ruth Chris Steaks will pop up. The Palm Steaks. And if we really want to get mobbed-up The Sparks Steaks (with a John Gotti free bobble-head promo!)
It was actually the Spiral to begin with(1972). Then the whiskey people came in and it was the Jim Beam Spiral, then just the Jim Beam. I guess when Lane's End took over sponsorship, it reverted back to the Spiral. Wasn't there a Lane's End Derby at one time? They have been known for some bad names at Turfway though. Do they still run the WEBN Frog Stakes?
Off the top of my head, the name went from Spiral to Jim Beam to Gallery Furniture to Spiral again (so, no sponsor for a couple years) to Lane's End to Horseshoe Casino to JACK Casino and finally to Jeff Ruby starting this year.
I'd never heard of Jeff Ruby until Mike Smith started wearing the name on his pants a few years back.
As for the WEBN Frog Stakes, that appears to be off the stakes schedule. It was the 2nd-back local prep for the Spiral (the John Battaglia being the main prep) but looking at their schedule, the Battaglia is the first stakes of the year they run for 3-year-old males. The WEBN was a 6 furlong sprint run in February...
