Any copyrighted material can be posted if you have the copyright owner's permission. If you do, we prefer you include a statement like, "Copyrighted. Posted with permission."

Fair Use law allows limited short excerpts of copyrighted text for non-commercial purposes. There is no hard and fast rule as to how much, but it should be a small portion of the total. For articles, we generally suggest a lead sentence or two along with a link to the original and a summary in your own words.

Artwork and photographs are copyrighted. Although it is difficult to publish a "small portion" of a piece of art, case law has allowed printing low resolution thumbnail size shots of larger images in some cases. Derivative works, such as using someone else's image as part of a signature or photographing a painting, are still covered by the original copyright.

Music and video have two copyright considerations - copyright on the work and copyright on the performance. Fair Use law allows short clips - up to 30 seconds.

Absence of a copyright statement does not mean a work is not copyrighted. Works fall under copyright the moment they are "published" or written down.

For more on this, see my Copyright Guidelines for the Web.

Delphi does not look for copyright violations, but will act on complaints from the copyright owners to protect ourselves. We do not take action on third party complaints at all.

Are the rules for reposting another persons posts still the same?

As I recall a poster could repost another posters post in it's entirety on the forum in which it's posted along with the link.

A post in another forum from another author could be reposted in a diferent forum provided it was treated just like an article off the internet...paraphrase or a short quote and then the link...

That's essentially correct as far as copyright rules are concerned. But we may also consider whether the purpose of the quote was to ridicule or demean the author. If that is the purpose, don't do it!

Got it...
I know we've been through the copyright stuff ever since I've been here...just keeps repeating<g>. If I have a question usually I just look up an old thread here..there's a ton of them. I wasn't sure about the reposting since it is a shadowy issue

This is from TOS

You maintain a copyright on any copyrighted original material you post, to the extent allowed by law. The reposting of a message on a different forum on Delphi Forums without permission of the author is prohibited, except that official Delphi Forums staff announcements posted in support forums may be reposted in other forums.

So harassing or not, if I were the author I'd complain. Get permission and it's no problem.

This is from TOS as well:

Like I told Walt, it's a shadowy area has basically said this same thing years ago when I brought this up. I was just seeing if it was still the rule. Typically I'll just paraphrase the post and provide a link to avoid hassles, However I've had mods tell me even that was a TOS violation...just wanted a little clarification.

Thanks

BTW...wasn't there a forum to see who the oldest poster on Delphi is? I know it's not me by a longshot, I posted to someone here who was from 1984 I think

My current account goes back to 1984. I had an earlier account in 1983. My user number is 526, but I'm not the earliest.
