A litle bit about me first?

I have guessed at shared ancestry with the indigenous folk who are called the Cherokees...

At least not yet:

No documentation or records...

But the family homestead is above the town of Boone...

My granny--Nellie (Kenneths) Thompson--had a garden where she grew stuff--and there was (or is)  a small fruit tree there--as well as a small mountain stream-- which ran (and runs)nearby...

Both the family homstead (at least what's left of it)  and Boone are in Western North Carolina...

Though the issue and problem for me--since I wasn't raised up in the region--is I know nothing or little about those who did and do acknowledge their Cherokee ancestry et al...

So I know of--not a lot about--those Cherokee towns--etc.

Though I did come across a website whereas some born again Christian types (including one indigenous convert)  went there to heal old wounds ala bad past white/indigenous relations:

And-- even though I am not a devotee myself--  (since part of my path of rediscovery was and is motivated by my desire to follow indigneous spiritual practices/ traditions et al):

I consider those unexpected insights a personal wake up call...

But,  how do I got about balancing relevations about cautious and wary rural folk, as contrasted with all of the pr coming from the Eastern Cherokee mainstays, i. e., about the benefits casinos have allegedly brought to their people?

This inquiring mind needs and wants to know!

Any and all suggestions will be appreciated and welcomed...

Thanks in advance!

Later...

Peace...

First of all, I must begin by telling you that I'm not a Native American and that I have no background in Native American anything.  However, I can tell you what's given me some knowlege of the Cherokee.

Wilma Mankiller's autobiography, "Mankiller," is a wonderful resource.  She weaves her story in with the story of the Cherokee, so you get not only her experience, but the history of the Cherokee.

Here's a good link:

http://library.thinkquest.org/J0110325/index.htm

It's part of the information that comes up if you Google "Pitter's Cherokee Trails." Pitter Seabaugh has done alot of research on Cherokee history and genealogy.

Those are my only two suggestions as someone who knows nothing and found these to be very wothwhile and subtantial sources of knowledge.

Good morning,  Jeanne...

And I read Ms. Mankiller's official biography awhile back (as well as I have a copy of it)....

But my point was and is to get those who post here and live on the 'rez'  their chance to clue some of us in who didn't and don't...

A few presume and assume those of us who hadn't don't care:

I say and write some of us who didn't simply don't know...

Some things we can't be faulted when they weren't and aren't our fault...

FYI...

Later...

Peace...

Well, I don't know what other people assume or presume because I'm not a mind reader, especially not across cyberspace.  But, I figure either people will want to tell me things or they won't and either way, it's fine with me.  Whatever they do or don't want to tell me, that's their perogative (sp?) and I'm fine with that.

Sure can't get it through the Net.

Much as some think or pretend so.

If it was easy and simpleI would've been there/done that by now...

As in:

People move...

Elders pass away...

Extended family members don't stay in touch...

Before I came of age:

My parents split up...

That's when my annual trips to see my paternal granparents ended too...

I only managed to venture back their once before they also passed away...

Geneology searches and family reunions cost dough:

Let's do keep it realistic as to which options are open to those who have loads of it or little to spare....

Advice is easier to give:

Harder to accept when that person doesn't truly realize or recognize the dire straits some of us were or are in...

Do keep that in mind as well...

Thanks!

Take care...

Later...

Peace...
