This afternoon after I left work, I got off the bus and was walking down the sidewalk toward the crosswalk where I have to cross to get to my apartment building.  This man stopped me and asked if I knew where if there was a Chinese restaurant in the area that has a buffet.  I don't, but I was making some suggestions as to where a restaurant like that might be in the area and he mentioned he'd come to Honolulu for the pow wow.

Anyway, we got into a conversation that lasted maybe half an hour or so - he was very interesting.  When we finally went our separate ways he tried to teach me how to say "good bye" in Cherokee and I swore up and down I'd remember it.

He told me to associate the way it sounds with "Donna's gotta go now."  And of course, 3 1/2 hours after the conversation, all I remember is "Donna's gotta go now."

So much for my ability to learn another language.  But I did learn quite a bit from him.

Or, if for some reason that does not work, go here:

http://www.cherokee.org/Culture/Default.aspx?culture=lexicon&Cherokee=L1XYtPrFb6eKPD8D4Lqjvg==&ID=jIUVL2jtRb8=

and type in the word you want to hear.

Lemme know if that works.

I registered and then tried to activate my account, but it keeps saying that there are no records to activate.   Maybe I'll try again later.

Got any more suggestions - I'm "fishing" with Goole looking for sites that will give me audio so I can hear what the words sound like.

There must be Cherokee living here in Hawaii...

I e-mailed the guy I met but I don't think he and his wife have access to a computer while they're here.
