Girls' basketball team stirs Cherokee Nation pride
Tuesday, December 18, 2007

The girls' basketball team at Sequoyah High School in Tahlequah, Oklahoma, has made the Cherokee Nation proud of an institution that was founded as an orphanage.

The team has won three state titles in a row. Angel Goodrich, a senior, is the first to win a Division I scholarship in the school's history.

"There are so many young kids watching her. They’ll set their goals to be like her," Larry Grigg, the athletic director, tells The New York Times.

The team is so popular that Chief Chad Smith, who graduated from the school, tries to arrange his schedule around the games -- his daughter also plays. His father went to Sequoyah and he has put renewed resources into the school, which had developed a reputation for troubled students.
