50 Rules to Throw Out When You Turn 50

Slide 1 of 51: We believe that 50 is the prime of your life. You have years and years of wisdom and life experience behind you to help you avoid those silly ol’ mistakes, and yet you are still young enough to travel the world or live new experiences right in your own hometown. So while you’re in the best years yet, some long-held beliefs — and that whole “life rulebook” — need to be thrown out.Back in your day, it was considered too forward to call back a person you were dating, white after Labor Day was considered to be a major social faux pas, and seeing a parent with brightly colored hair was shocking. Not anymore! After all, you’re 50, not dead.Don’t think you can still learn how to bake bread or do the tango? Well, think again. It’s never too late to try something new or grow into your self-confidence. But of course, not all of life’s rules that are meant to be broken are fun. (You may want to rethink that diet soda and sugar-free candy habit at 50). For more rules that are no longer relevant as a middle aged adult, click here for the 50 rules to throw out when you turn 50.

Slide 2 of 51: It may seem like the newest generation is leading the charge when it comes to social change, but just because you’re over 50 doesn’t mean you need to be stuck in your ways! Get politically active now by becoming an Election Day worker or volunteering for a cause you care about, like fighting hunger in America.

Slide 3 of 51: Once many people reach a certain age, they start to become ashamed of how many years they have under their belt. Stop saying it’s the “21st anniversary of my 29th birthday.” You’re 50! Wear it loud and wear it proud. Age ain’t nothing but a number, after all.

Slide 4 of 51: You may think that cutting dairy is the key to keeping trim, but think again! In reality, your bone mass reaches its peak when you turn 30. If you skimp on dairy products, you’re missing out on huge amounts of calcium your bones could benefit from. That means you’re on track for a greater risk of osteoporosis and joint pain. Dairy also contains good amounts of vitamin D, which can keep your skin, hair, and overall mood from degrading as you age.

Slide 5 of 51: Presumably, at age 50, you’ve spent a good amount of your life caring for other people. Whether it’s your spouse, your children, or your friends, your needs probably come last at least most of the time. Every now and then, be a little selfish. Spend extra money on a sexy new outfit for yourself; book a solo vacation to that exotic island you’ve always dreamed of. This time is your time. Enjoy it!

Slide 6 of 51: Nothing has to be a once-in-a-lifetime experience. Sure, you studied abroad in Germany in college, but when was the last time you went back to Europe? Re-experience your favorite life moments; you never know what istockphoto.comavel clichés might be totally worth it.

Slide 7 of 51: Vegetables and beans are very important for a healthy diet, but canned versions of these super-healthy foods are soaked in sodium and bisphenol A (BPA). Sodium is a food that can really hike up your blood pressure. If you’re looking to extend the shelf life of your groceries, consider frozen veggies.

Slide 8 of 51: It’s easy to feel that carbs are the way to a rounder belly, but that isn’t true! Carbs such as whole wheat bread, pasta, and oats contain fiber, and that is an absolute must-have for anyone over 50. Most women require between 25 and 30 grams of soluble fiber every day to help lower cholesterol as it creeps up with age. Cut the carbs and you’ll miss out on all of those health benefits and probably will feel even more tired than you were already.

Slide 9 of 51: Listen, we’re not going to tell you to forego spring cleaning or to keep your house a mess, but we will tell you that you don’t worry about having a perfectly clean home. Take less time dusting off your bookshelves and spend more time with your loved ones.

Slide 10 of 51: You don’t have to be a perfect dancer in order to boogie down. If you’re a little embarrassed when you put on your dancing shoes, consider taking a dance class.
